Adult Scoliosis Physiotherapy

Adult scoliosis can affect much more than posture alone. It may also contribute to discomfort or pain, uncertainty about how to move and exercise safely, and difficulty knowing which activities are most beneficial for the individual considering their scoliosis.

At the same time, staying active and continuing to participate in meaningful activities, exercise, sport, and daily movement is extremely important for long-term health and quality of life. Treatment focuses on helping individuals better understand their scoliosis, improve movement confidence and body awareness, and develop strategies to stay active safely and comfortably long term.

Scoliosis is often a lifelong journey, and treatment should support individuals not only in managing symptoms, but also in continuing to move well, stay active, and participate confidently in the activities that are meaningful to them throughout their lives.

My approach to adult scoliosis rehabilitation combines physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE), movement-based rehabilitation, and motor control strategies to help individuals move more confidently and comfortably in daily life, exercise, sport, and long-term physical activity.

Treatment is individualized and may include scoliosis-specific exercise strategies, postural and movement retraining, breathing awareness, strength integration, and guidance on transitioning corrective principles into real-world movement and activity.

Common Goals of Treatment

  • Improve posture and movement awareness

  • Reduce pain and stiffness

  • Improve muscle balance and overall function

  • Support confidence with exercise and physical activity

  • Help manage scoliosis long term

  • Reduce risk of progression where appropriate

Staying Active with Scoliosis

Many adults with scoliosis are unsure whether activities such as strength training, yoga, Pilates, running, or sports are safe for their spine.

In many cases, remaining active is both safe and beneficial. Treatment focuses on helping individuals better understand movement strategies, improve body awareness, build confidence, and integrate scoliosis management into the activities they enjoy.

What is PSSE?

Physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE) refers to specialized exercise approaches developed specifically for scoliosis rehabilitation. These approaches aim to address the three-dimensional nature of scoliosis through postural correction, breathing strategies, movement retraining, and individualized exercise programming.

Laura has advanced postgraduate training in BSPTS/Schroth and SEAS approaches and remains actively involved in ongoing scoliosis-specific education and international conferences through SOSORT.
